A continuing Journey into the Imagination of Fairy and Fantasy Artist Kylie InGold

Kylie has been painting Fairies, Angels and the Fantasy World for more than two decades; her fascination began as a little girl when the fairies at the bottom of the garden captured her imagination.

The worlds showcased in her art have fascinated humans for centuries but are often lost in our contemporary hi-tech society, and her wish is that by viewing her art we are taken through a journey into our imaginations and that we remember our sometimes forgotten child within. A thread of creative magic weaves together the canvas images and transports us to a place where fantasy feels almost familiar.

There are no boundaries in the fantasy world, it becomes as the imagination sees.

Kylie's work has been licensed and published internationally and appears in private collections and public spaces.
She is a self-taught artist, which in some ways has allowed her a bohemian-like freedom to paint without convention and to explore her mystical imagination.

Kylie says, "Being self-taught also means that sometimes you don't have a clue what you are doing. I have had many failures, what I also call learning experiences, that's ok, a coat of white gesso, a quick rub with sandpaper and start again. My teachers have been old masters' paintings, I've spent many hours looking in detail at these artists' works and I still do, my favourites are the romantic Pre-raphaelites and Bourguereau. I copied and painted some of these to try and work out how they achieved their effects".

She originally began with pen and ink drawings and when she was 18 purchased her first set of oil paints. Her first oil painting was of a fairy that her sister still hangs proudly in her home. She is surprised the fairy is still visible as she used very little paint on the canvas.

It has been suggested over the years that maybe she 'should' paint a genre more commercial. She was made very aware that there was no market for Fairy or Fantasy Art in Australia at that time, except for children's art, and the only well-known Fairy Artist, Ida Rentoul-Outhwaite, was at the turn of last century.

Maybe we'd forgotten our inner child in the land downunder. She felt alone in her love of the Faeries. She finally succumbed to the pressure and in between painting her fairies, she painted frogs and other animals, and entered some of these in juried competitions winning numerous 1st and other prizes. She also gradually started to enter some of her fairy and fantasy art into art competitions however in the beginning fantasy art wasn't considered to be 'real art' and the first time one of her fantasy paintings was hung in an art show she received a Highly Commended award, giving her a small boost of encouragement.

She became frustrated and bored and made the personal decision that she didn't want to paint what was considered trendy or commercial. She was raising her young family and mostly painted at night when her sons were tucked up in bed, and she chose to paint my fairies. She says, "I love making their little whimsical, misty worlds, underwater paradises for my mermaids to swim in, and with each painting I learned a little more about what I could do with the paint. I was at peace painting my imagination".

In 1996 when Kylie launched her first website, or rather a one page site, showcasing her fairies, the Internet was in its embryonic stage. Slowly she started to receive emails from overseas, mostly America and Europe requesting prints of her fairy art, and telling her how much they love fairies. She was completely surprised. She started offering prints for sale on her site. Her domain http://www.ingoldart.com was registered a few years later and the offers of publishing and licensing started coming.

Inspirations:

The only artist Kylie knew of when growing up was Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, and she spent ages copying her drawings as a young person.
She tried to keep her own style in her work, but found little bits of Ida creep in...Kylie started to paint more and more with oils, and the Victorian fairy artists and the pre-Raphelites became an influence as she studied their techniques.

It is rather an old program, as the internet did not have broadband and most people only has 36kbs modems.

ePrint Digital Downloads

In 2003-2204 I launched the Fairystore with eprint digital downloads. I became concerned about the amount of paper and packaging and plastic which was required to send the around the world.



This was my logo. I thought it was a great idea. In 2004 the idea was just a little bit before its time.
The Eprint site is offline at the present as I need now to have the site in its own domain so as time permits I am giving it a complete overhaul.

In the early days of the internet a domain name cost around $300.00 which at the time was out of
my artists budget.I had my website hosted on various servers that came free with my internet connection.
Or available for free online. Most of these free places did not allow you to sell products.So any sales I did were requests via emails.

Some of these I have found on the internet archives.
I will list more as I find them.
I am not able to remember my first one page website in 1996.
I have had new computers since then as well.
I have searched for it, a bit too far back I think it was on tripod.com or fortunecity.com
